The M256 is a sophisticated 3.0-litre inline-six with an integrated starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor — a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
Because the SPRINTER (PETROL) uses a completely different engine family from the V8 M178 fitted to the Sprinter 63 and GT 63 S, parts and rebuild specifications don't cross over between them.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES SPRINTER (PETROL) ENGINE
The petrol Sprinter arrived with the VS30 facelift in 2023, a significant change that added a 2.0-litre turbo petrol option to the range for the first time in the current generation. It uses an M270-family 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, producing 188hp and driving the rear wheels only — it's a different unit from the diesel OM654 that replaced the outgoing V6, and sits alongside it in the current Sprinter range.
