Mercedes SLK200 Timing Chain & Balance Shaft Wear (R171/R172, M271)
If your SLK200 is an R171 or R172 model with the M271 engine — that's the 2004–2016 generations — timing chain stretch and balance shaft issues are a known pattern on this engine, backed by established Mercedes specialist consensus. We replace the timing chain, timing gears, and gaskets as standard on every M271 rebuild.
The older R170 generation uses a different engine, the M111, which doesn't share this specific issue.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES SLK200 ENGINE
The SLK200 was a mainstay of the SLK range from 1996 until the model was discontinued in 2016, spanning three generations under one badge. Early cars (R170, 1996–2004) use the M111 — a 2.0‑litre four‑cylinder petrol engine. From the R171 generation onwards (2004–2011, and continuing into the R172 2011–2016), the SLK200 switched to the M271, a different four‑cylinder unit. Knowing which one your car has matters, because the components and the known wear pattern differ between them — which is exactly why we confirm your exact engine by registration before quoting. The SLK200 is no longer in production, but we continue to rebuild and replace engines for every one still on the road.

M256 (R190, 2023–present)
A 3.0-litre inline-six petrol mild-hybrid engine fitted to the SLK200 from 2023 to present. The M256 features an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and electric auxiliary compressor, making it a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
