The M256 is a sophisticated 3.0-litre inline-six with an integrated starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor — a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
Because the G500 (W465) uses a completely different engine family from the V8 M178 fitted to the G-Class 63 and GT 63 S, parts and rebuild specifications don't cross over between them.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES G500 (W465) ENGINE
The G500 has been part of the G-Class range since the 1990s, and the current W465 generation represents the latest evolution. The W465 G500 uses the M176 — a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, which is a different unit from the pre-2018 naturally aspirated M113/M273 V8s found in earlier G500s. The M176 is the same engine family used in other current Mercedes models, and we've adapted our rebuild process specifically for this twin-turbo V8.

A 3.0-litre inline-six petrol mild-hybrid engine fitted to the G500 (W465) from 2023 to present.
