ABOUT THE MERCEDES SL55 AMG ENGINE
The SL55 AMG sits at the heart of the current-generation R232 SL range, which marked a significant shift for the model — the SL moved to Mercedes-AMG exclusively with this generation. The SL55 uses the M177 — a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that's a genuine AMG-designed engine, hand-assembled and shared with other AMG performance models. It replaced the naturally aspirated M156 and earlier M157 variants in the SL's line-up, bringing a torque-rich, responsive character that defines the modern AMG driving experience.
We continue to rebuild and replace M256 engines for every SL55 AMG on the road.
MERCEDES SL55 AMG ENGINE CODES
M256 (R190, 2023–present)
A 3.0-litre inline-six petrol mild-hybrid engine fitted to the SL55 AMG from 2023 to present. The M256 features an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and electric auxiliary compressor, making it a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
