The M256 is a sophisticated 3.0-litre inline-six with an integrated starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor — a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
Because the MAYBACH S580 uses a completely different engine family from the V8 M178 fitted to the S-Class 63 and GT 63 S, parts and rebuild specifications don't cross over between them.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES MAYBACH S580 ENGINE
The Maybach S580 is the V8-powered version of Mercedes-Maybach's flagship luxury saloon. It uses the M176 — a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with mild hybrid technology, shared with other high-end Mercedes models of its era. The engine first appeared in the X222-generation Maybach S560 (which used the same M176 from 2017), then continued into the Z223 Maybach S580 from 2021. It's a smooth, powerful unit, and while no specific engine issue is yet confirmed as a widespread pattern for this application, we service it to the same high standard as every other V8 in our workshop.
