Mercedes SLK230 Oil Leaks & Coolant System Wear (M256 I6)
The M256 is a sophisticated 3.0-litre inline-six with an integrated starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor — a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
Because the SLK230 uses a completely different engine family from the V8 M178 fitted to the SLK 63 and GT 63 S, parts and rebuild specifications don't cross over between them.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES SLK230 ENGINE
The SLK230 was part of the first-generation SLK (R170) range, produced from 1996 to 2004. It uses the M111 — a 2.3-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that was widely used across Mercedes models of that era. The SLK230 was the mid-range petrol option in the R170 line-up, sitting between the SLK200 and the V6-powered SLK320. The SLK was discontinued in 2016 and succeeded by the SLC, but we continue to rebuild and replace engines for every one still on the road.

A 2.3-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine fitted to the SLK230 throughout the R170 generation (1996–2004). No specific known issue has been independently confirmed for this engine in SLK230 application. We replace timing chain, timing gears and gaskets as standard on every M111 rebuild.
